The World on the Other Side!
“Welcome to Electronic City Complex”, the signboard read
Where people had Identity Cards strapped around their neck
Back here, our black and white uniforms used to be our identity
The world on the other side seemed strange!
Mini bus rides turned into Shuttl rides
Where everyone was glued onto their mobile screen
“Civil naki Criminal?”, no one asked any longer!
The world on the other side got stranger
Tea in earthern pots got replaced with machine made coffee
Which tasted exactly the same, every time I sipped it
“Aaj adrak waali chai laya hoon madam”, no one exclaimed any longer
The world on the other side got stranger
A quick trip to the daab-waala no longer was necessary
For the office boy would get it right at your desk
Sipping the tender coconut water, in tall glasses I wondered
The tale that the daab-waala might have to tell!
Uniforms paved way to a bright colourful wardrobe
The white crisp shirt was kept away in the bottom most shelf
The Black coat and gown were dry-cleaned,
They were put away with naphthalene
The wardrobe got a makeover,
The world on the other side got stranger!
The black coat coupled with the sweltering heat
Gave way to centralized air-conditioned cubicles
Workstations were fun, I no longer had to toil my way in the sun
The stilettoes had now started adorning my feet
Nobody cared if I flaunted a tattoo
Or wore red highlights to work
The corporate environment is too busy to notice
If your behavior looks like an oddest quirk
Legal conferences were replaced by team meets
Creating power point presentations became our motive
Designations had now changed, new business cards were arranged
People started addressing me from an Advocate to a Legal Executive
TGIF became the new mantra,
a two-day weekend seemed nothing short of a luxury
Yet when it came to the Courts, I could no longer address the jury
Tall towers, elevators, squeaky clean rest-rooms
Made their way to the old-heritage buildings and the stinky bathrooms.
The world on the other side seemed strange
Yet the person in me did not want anything to change!
