Major Life Update Announcement | August 2022
Today I completed three months at my workplace and got off probation. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have known by now. For those, who still do not know, I have stepped into the role of Content Manager for a brand that primarily manufactures cloth diapers, apart from other essentials for children. The brand focuses on sustainability, besides comfort and quality. I had been using their products for Tara for quite a while now when I chanced upon a vacancy for the post of Community Manager for their Facebook group. I too was looking for a change, since stepping out for work was becoming increasingly difficult day by day. And as they say, luck favours the brave! I took a plunge and applied for the post and got through, right when I was struggling with getting back to work after my maternity break. The choice was an easy one. Salary hike, remote working, and exploring a domain that was completely new to me – since the Company showed faith in me, it was time for me to give my best!
A lot of you wanted to know about my new role and had questions regarding how I am balancing the role of a work-from-home mother. This post is primarily addressed to them.
How did you decide on switching your career without any experience?
Switching careers without any prior experience was definitely challenging. Truth be told, I felt like I would give up in the first week itself. Yes, it was that challenging! Copy, Creative, Brief, Trello, Slack, all these were new jargons. As an Advocate, I had never imagined that I would be writing content for social media. But then, it all depends on how flexible you are! How quickly you can adapt yourself. In my case, I had to catch up with the skills required for my present job. My blogging experience helped me a lot in this case. Also the fact that I was a consumer/end user of the brand helped me a lot.
My entire company works remotely. And once a week we all catch up. See each other’s faces on zoom calls, crack a joke, make a note of what is coming up.
Of course, there are pros and cons to be weighed. I did my own research during my maternity break and zeroed down on something that suited my requirements.
How is it different from being an Advocate? How exciting is it?
All these years, I have drafted petitions. Sent out legal notices. Filed cases. Spoken to clients about their legal battles. Run around Courts with my gown and band.
Now I write quirky captions sitting in the comfort of home. I breastfeed Tara. I think of ideas that new parents can connect to. I try and come up with campaigns that make our brand noticeable.
I had to unlearn and learn many aspects of social media marketing. Of content writing. Of communicating virtually with office peers. Of being available at the drop of a hat over calls and messages. There is something new to look forward to every single day.
Is work from home easy?
Not at all.
I might not step out physically like every other office goer, but in my mind, I need to adjust to the routine of working virtually. Add to it, feeding a one-year-old on demand. Add to it, being available for her diaper changes. There have been times that I have changed her diapers while being virtually present for a meeting. I have nursed her to sleep while being on a conference call. Of course, we have a nanny/ayah who takes care of her while I am working. You may want to read more here. This arrangement makes working from home a blessing. On days when she does not turn up, my family supports me, while I take things slow.
But yes, if you ask me, work from home is a blessing in disguise! No more traffic rush, commutation issues, coffee breaks, getting dressed up, being presentable at all times, and most importantly – never ever missing the little one at home! Only focus on work and get sloppy kisses when you feel like going through a rough patch during the day!
So if you are someone who is struggling with your present job, has reached saturation when it comes to your present salary or is simply bored with what you have been doing over the years – it’s time you make a SWITCH!
Such a nice read. Waiting for this kind of blog for so long. Would love to know more regarding work from home.
