Menstrual Cup | FAQ’s | How, When, What, Why – PART II
Hi everyone! This post is an extended version of my previous post, which talks about Choosing the right Menstrual Cup-Insertion-Removal-Storage. This post will list some FAQ’s that aim at answering most of the common questions that cloud your mind while converting into a Menstrual Cup user. Let us get on board and answer them.
- Why use a Menstrual Cup?
First things first, why switch over? Well, it is good for the environment. Tampons and Sanitary Napkins land up in the wasteland and often does not even decompose. A Menstrual Cup on the other hand is reusable. It is cost saving. A Menstrual Cup on an average will last you for 10 years when washed and stored properly. You can also swim, hike, run, do a salsa while menstruating! There have been several times when I was on my periods while on a trip, and have hence refrained from swimming. Am glad that I can have all the fun now (Although with Co-Vid it is nearly impossible to figure out our next trip). Also, no more trips to the Chemist Shops for Sanitary Pads. No more reminding yourself to keep an extra pad in your bag. No more hassles of disposing a pad. Just drop in a Menstrual Cup in your bag and you are sorted. No more rashes from pads (I have had really bad experiences with these). No more tension of spotting on your bed sheet. Infact it would be a nightmare for me waking up to find my bed sheets soiled at times. With a menstrual cup, all this is history.
Do you really need more reasons?Â
- Who can use a Menstrual Cup?
Anybody who menstruates. As simple as that. There is one size for everyone. Even virgins and teens can use it. Just choose the right size. Most brands offer a size right for the teens, women before childbirth and women who have delivered vaginally. In case of confusions, please reach out to the brand yourself and ask before making a purchase. SAFECUP has been very helpful in this matter, and they have offered all solutions to my questions over WhatsApp.
- Does it hurt while inserting the Menstrual Cup?
Initially you might feel uncomfortable but that is mostly because of the fear that clouds in our mind. The trick is, you need to figure out the right fold while inserting it, and then it will be a breeze. Most brands recommend the C Fold, but that never worked out for me! I quickly scanned through a very helpful Youtube Video , and am so glad that the 7 fold method worked perfectly for me. It literally takes less than 30 seconds to insert the cup now.
- Can the Menstrual Cup get lost in there?
Hang on, it is nearly impossible for the Menstrual Cup to get lost in your body! The cervix will never allow the Menstrual Cup to penetrate beyond a certain limit which you can reach easily with your fingers. Hence, stop worrying. Big relief, right?
- How long do we need to use and then empty our Menstrual Cup?
Depends on your flow ideally. I remember to empty mine after every 8 to 10 hours, but you can even keep it in for 12 hours if your flow is not too heavy. So say, if I wear it in the morning at around 11 after I take my shower, it is emptied and reused at around 9 pm at night before I hit off for the bed. Similarly, if I would be using it at around 9 in the morning before I leave for work, I will be changing it at around 7 in the evening once I am back from work. You will soon get a hang of it once you start using it every cycle.
- Is it messy? Will I freak out at the sight of blood?
Trust me, almost every girl might think of the same while you make a switch, but with proper grip and control while pulling it out, it is not at all messy! Blood can freak you out, but stay strong. Empty it very carefully, wash the Menstrual Cup and you are good to go.
- Can I poop or pee with the Menstrual Cup inside me?
Yes you can comfortably 🙂 It does not interfere with it.
- Can I use the Menstrual Cup while I have had an IUD in me?
Ideally you can, but please consult your gynecologist before you do so.
- Can I start using Menstrual Cups directly after pads or do I need to switch on to a Tampon to get a hang of it?
I have never used a tampon. I made a switch one fine day, and so can you.
- Can Menstrual Cups cause Toxic Shock Syndrome? Is it approved by gynecologists?
Menstrual Cups do not absorb blood unlike tampons, hence they do not cause Toxic Shock Syndrome. Gynecologists approve of it. But in case you are still not convinced, please consult your gynecologist.
- Can I use a Menstrual Cup while sleeping?
Yes you can. You can sleep with it, you can exercise or even swim with it.Â
- Is it comfortable?
If you have inserted it correctly, you will not even feel the Menstrual Cup. I completely forget that I am on my periods. How about that?
Do try and convert at your own pace. No hurries. But once you convert, you will never look back. In case you need some pep-talk, main hoon na 🙂
Do let me know if you are a Menstrual Cup user or have converted yourself into one during this period, or this post has urged you to convert into one. Would love to hear you out.
