Pee Training an Opinionated Toddler | TicTalkToe

I have been a cloth diapering mamma to Tara (not exclusively though!).

Oh the cloth diapers look so cute on Tara! Wish she keeps using them till she outgrows them!

Never knew God would take my wish with utmost seriousness! She finally weaned off diapers at 35 months!

I started potty and pee training Tara when she was approximately 20 months old. But she refused to sit on the potty seat. I got fancy potty seat ladders for her 2nd birthday which she could climb and use it in our washroom. But she cried and refused to enter the bathroom. I tried stickers, showing her potty training books, praying to God and what not! Only to be met by a reluctant toddler who would pee and poop in her diaper. I gave up. I knew it was not my time to train her. People remarked that I had missed the bus, and that elimination communication (please google if you have not heard about it) was to be done when she started sitting with support. I sobbed. I just prayed that she gets trained when she is admitted to a primary school. Almost all other children of her age who she is friends with were trained, and that caused me further anxiety. The diaper bills were on the rise and washing cloth diapers seemed like a never ending chore.

When Tara was about a month short of her 3rd birthday, one day she came running to me that she wanted to pee. I was thrilled! I immediately jumped off the bed, took her to the washroom and signaled her to sit. But she wanted to stand & pee. I did not argue further. I allowed her to stand and pee on the washroom floor. I would clean her after that. She found some new fun in this. In a few days she would also want to sit on the commode. She would love to flush after peeing. In another few days she would even come running to me saying that she wanted to poop. I could not believe my ears! A month ago she would pee and poop in her diapers, and suddenly she got pee and potty trained on her own. It required a little bit of effort from my family and her caregiver. We would take her to the toilet every one hour and make “ssshhhh” sounds. This prompted her to pee then and there. Initially she would resist, but now she does not resist anymore and happily goes to the washroom!

We even have a portable potty seat where she sleeps in the room, so that it is easy for her (and for us) to make her pee in the middle of the night. We do have occasional bedwetting incidents, however, they are rare. We monitor her liquid intake an hour before her bedtime and she is given water occasionally.

So we have finally bid goodbye to her diapers and padded underwear. We have switched to the SuperSoft Underwear by SuperBottoms. It is extremely soft, come in cute prints and colours, and Tara absolutely loves wearing them.

I will not lie, I do miss her cute little bums adorning the cloth diapers. But then I remember the huge load of laundry and immediately thank my lucky stars that she got pee and potty trained almost on her own.

When was your little one toilet trained? How was your journey like?
